Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Springfield-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.

FAQ

Springfield VA Disability Questions

Is there a VA clinic in Springfield?

Yes. The Springfield VA Clinic on South 6th Street is part of VA Illiana Health Care, which is based at the Danville VA Medical Center.

How do I get to VA appointments in Danville or St. Louis?

Sangamon County’s Veterans Assistance Commission offers transportation to VA facilities in Danville, Peoria and St. Louis for eligible veterans. Call ahead to schedule.

Does my VA rating affect Illinois property taxes?

Yes. Illinois reduces the equalized assessed value of a qualifying veteran’s home starting at a 30% rating, and at 70% or higher the first $250,000 of assessed value is exempt. You must reapply every year with the county.

Is there free claim help in Springfield?

Yes. The Sangamon County Veterans Assistance Commission, IDVA Veteran Service Officers and accredited VSOs such as the American Legion, DAV and VFW all help at no cost.

Are you affiliated with the VA?

No. We are an independent private company. Neither the Department of Veterans Affairs nor any state or county agency is behind us or endorses our work, and Springfield-area veterans reach us by phone and video.
